Chemicals in fireworks that produce color

Posted on | May 12, 2010 | No Comments

The color of fireworks is the makeup of the gunpowder in the shells. It’s certainly has a big visual aspect…  and is very appealing… if people just wanted noise, they could fire off a spud gun! Anyway, a shell is a hollow sphere that consists of an explosive charge at the center “usually Trinitrotoluene or tnt for short”, another paper sphere around that, then what are called stars, and then a final hard paper sphere with a fuse that goes from the bottom to the center. The stars are made up of  a blend of oxidizing agent, reducing agent, coloring agent (metal salt), and binders. When they burn they create visual and audio effects depending on the makeup. For instance, a red burning star has either lithium carbonate or strontium carbonate for a brighter red. silver is made with aluminum or titanium, blue is made with copper compounds. purple is a mixture of strontium “red” and copper “blue”, green contains barium chloride, yellow is made with sodium chloride, and orange is made with calcium chloride.

The mortar tube is a cardboard tube that the inside diameter is just big enough to allow the shell to slide in easily. The bottom of the tube is capped off and the top is open. The bottom will have a small hole for a fuse. Usually the bottom is pre-packed with lift powder but sometimes you may fill it yourself. Once the powder is in the bottom of the tube the shell will be placed in fuse down. When the fuse outside the mortar tube is lit it hits the lift powder causing the shell to lift high in the air at the same time as burning the shells fuse. The timing of the fuse will depend on the altitude of the shell.

My son, David had gone to play in Paul’s house and he found Paul playing with potato cannons. The game was just superb and David just loved the game so much that when he came home he told about potato cannon and asked me if I could get one for him. Actually I haven’t heard of potato cannons and I didn’t pay attention to what he told me, but then he started nagging me day by day and I was frustrated. At last when I inquired in the store I found them to be very expensive and I told David that I would purchase them later.

Afterwards after inquiring with some of my friends who told me about this website, I then referred various websites and ultimately came across the above website in which I found all the apt details on how to build a potato cannon on your own. I found the site quite interesting because you can do it by yourself without seeking anyone’s help and you would have the finished product by three or four days. David was very excited when I finally did it for him and I told him that I would teach him also to make potato cannons so he can also experience the thrill of making it.

Potato guns for a lot of fun

I have three children and all of them have only about two years of age difference. That is actually a boon as well as a bane because I have to buy the same toy for all three of them and it was starting to become a bit of a nuisance when one breaks it and complains that the other has one but he doesn’t. It happened with a potato gun too in my house. I bought three very expensive potato guns for all three of them because my eldest son saw it at his friend’s house. My youngest son broke his gun and asked me for another one. When I bought it for him, the next one was broken and this became a routine.

It was a really bad thing because, the guns were really expensive and finally I refused to buy any more of those guns. At that point there was a lot of hue and cry in the house and there was no peace of mind for me or my wife. When I told my friend about the condition in the house, he asked me to visit this site and promised me that it would help. He had given me the address of this website that had all the information on potato guns and potato cannons and you can easily learn to make all of them. After that whenever anyone of them broke it, all I had to do was make another one.

I once went to a movie with my friends and it was an old fashioned movie with a lot of wars and I was surprised a lot to see cannons in the movie. I asked one of the guys who came to the movie if it was possible to get such a cannon in the stores. He told me that it was not possible. But he also told me that its alternative, the potato cannon was available in the stores. I visited a store and asked for potato cannons and the shopkeeper led me to the section where they kept it and it looked magnificent. I was actually stunned when I got to know the price because it was just too costly.

My friend gave me a call as soon as I got home and asked me if I got it and when I told him that it was too costly to afford, he told me that his brother had given him the address of this great website that teaches you to make everything from a potato gun to potato cannons. I got to that site straight away and I was really amazed by what I saw there. Within two days, I had a potato cannon that functioned perfectly.

Discovery of fireworks

Do you know when fireworks were disclosed to the world? Actually gun powder was discovered by the Chinese about 2000 years ago. It was contemplation that a Chinese cook accidentally mixed three kitchen ingredients and when he heated it gave out black flaky powder and when this was burned it came out with a loud bang. This is what is called as gun powder and the Chinese named it “huo yao” which means fire chemical and further modifications were added to it. They put this mixture into the hollow of a bamboo stick and when this was thrown into fire, the gas produced by the powder caused a lot of pressure inside and it came out as a loud blast. This is how the first cracker originated.

Subsequently fireworks became a part and parcel of Chinese festivals like wedding, functions etc and it was used during any kind of celebrations. As the explosives were known for their loud noise, they were used during warfare. It is said that Marco Polo during one of his visits to China transferred this discovery to the Middle East and it became very popular there also. Slowly the knowledge of crackers spread to different parts of the world and before long, people all around the world started using them.

Get plans before making crossbows

Posted on | July 19, 2009 | No Comments

My children were very bored of playing the same old games like cards or playing computer games, etc. and they wanted to play something different and so my son and his friends asked me if there was some thrilling game in store for them and asked me if I could help them in that regard. Even I had run out of ideas as to what to do at that time, I remembered my friend who once told me that there were many sites on paintballs and crossbows and you could learn to make one on your own and he told me it was very easy.

Anyway, I made up my mind to go about the process and I was astonished at what I saw. The site had clear ideas on plans to make a crossbow and I knew that if I referred properly and if I went about the process carefully, I would be able to make a crossbow for the children. I then tried doing it and indeed I was very successful in doing so and I was satisfied that I could do it and glad that those children had a superb game to play on their own without troubling others and enjoy themselves.

Make your own crossbows and have fun

I was planning on a vacation to our farm house with my friends and six of us were going there and I was indeed thrilled about the whole idea. As only we were going, my parents were a little worried if we would be up to any mischief, but then he told us that we could enjoy to our maximum and we guaranteed him that we would behave ourselves. As I was always fond of crossbows, I asked my father if he could buy them for us and my father at once gave me a pensive look, but I actually didn’t understand what that meant.

The next day, I saw my father making crossbow for all of us and when I inquired as to where he got that wonderful idea, he told me that he browsed the net and found guidelines on how to make your own crossbow and he was very thrilled because it had clear information and apt ideas on how to go about the whole process of making them. So, my father did not have any problem at all and I thought my father was such a wonderful person and thanked God for the wonderful father he gave me and I knew that we going to spend the vacation superbly.
